SKAFTAFELL AND SVARTIFOSS WATERFALL
Skaftafell is a preservation area in Öræfi in south-east Iceland and a beautiful mountainous region on the southern edge of the Vatnajokull Glacier. It was once a national park but has been a part of the Vatnajokull National Park since 2008. The natural contrasts are breathtaking; active volcanos, might glaciers, powerful glacial rivers, endless black sandy plains, desolate wastes and green vegetation. These contrasts truly remind you of nature’s striking versatility. Skaftafell is a very popular camping ground and has numerous hiking trails that offer hikers magnificent sceneries. Tour operations also offer a wide variety of adventure tours in the area.
Svartifoss waterfall is located in Skaftafell and is renowned for its extraordinary beauty. It is 12 metres high with black basalt column formations around it and beautifully frames the waterfall and give its name, Black Falls. Svartifoss waterfall cannot be seen from the road so you’ll need to make the 45-minute hike towards it but the hike is easy and well worth it!
